an ornamental silver knife

Jangdojang (lit. 'decorative knifemaker') is a term used to refer to a skilled artisan of small knives (jangdo, meaning 'decorative knife') carried traditionally as a personal decoration or a weapon for self-protection. The decorative knife as a weapon is known to have started to be carried out in the Goryeo period. In the later Joseon period after the Imjin Wars (1592-98), carrying the knife became a widespread practice among the noble ladies who wanted to use it in case of emergency to keep their chastity or fidelity.

The traditional decorative knives are largely divided into two groups according to the way they are carried, paedo ('fastening knife') which is designed for fastening at the waist and nangdo ('pouch knife') for carrying in a pouch. They are also classified into several groups according to the materials, shapes and decorations of the sheath. The decoration of the sheath, for instance, divides the knives into two, 'elaborately decorated' (gajeun) and 'basic' (matbaegi) knives. The knives of the second group are then divided into two according to the shape of the sheath, those of the 'plain' tubular body (pyeongmatbaegi) and the 'z-shaped' body (eulja matbaegi). Other widely known decorative knives include samo jangdo ('square knife'), mojaebi jangdo ('angled knife'), geumjangdo ('gold knife'), eunjangdo ('silver knife') and baegok jangdo ('white jade knife')

The art of decorative knifemaking was prospered in Seoul, Ulsan, Yeongju, Namwon, Gwangyang and Daejeon. The works made by the artisans in Gwangyang and Daejeon were particularly highly regarded fro the long history and elaborate details.
